DKT International releases 2012 family planning impact success in 19 developing countries
Washington, D.C., (March 13, 2013): DKT International, one of the largest providers of family planning services in the developing world, has released new 2012 statistics documenting its positive impact in 19 countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America. Based on analysis of services and products delivered in 2012, DKT averted 8.2 million pregnancies, 14,000 maternal deaths, 77,000 child deaths, and 1.7 million abortions.
“These results validate our approach to provide safe and affordable options for family planning and HIV prevention through social marketing,” said Christopher H. Purdy, Executive Vice President of DKT International. “The organizational benchmark of success for DKT is results achieved, as we provide services that can be measured with hard statistical documentation and a self-sustaining financial model that benefits people at all socio-economic levels in the countries we serve.”
DKT operations in each country sell condoms and other contraceptives, and provide reproductive health and family planning services, through innovative marketing and distribution channels, including midwives, clinics, and pharmacies. The success of these efforts is illustrated by 2012 figures for these dynamic and innovative programs, for example:
- DKT Ethiopia supplies an estimated 39% of the country’s family planning services. In 2012 DKT Ethiopia’s efforts averted 1.1 million pregnancies, 3,300 maternal deaths, 28,300 child deaths and 101,400 abortions.
- DKT Indonesia is the largest private family planning program in the world. In October 2012, DKT Indonesia reached 1 billion in condom sales. In 2012 DKT Indonesia’s programs averted 3.1 million pregnancies, 3,600 maternal deaths, 14,000 child deaths and nearly 838,000 abortions.
- DKT Philippines is 100% financially sustainable and in 2012 was able to provide seed money for a start-up operation in Pakistan. In 2012, the Philippines averted more than 960,000 pregnancies, 500 maternal deaths, nearly 5,200 child deaths and almost 259,000 abortions.
“The DKT country director custom-tailors their program to help the maximum number of people through culturally appropriate programming with a strong sense of local ownership,” Purdy added. “Our 2012 impact results are testimony to each director’s commitment and creativity to provide goods and services as normal commercial purchases offering consumers a benefit at an affordable price.”
