Our Programs

DKT International directs 17 programs in Mexico, Brazil, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Mozambique, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Turkey, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, China, and the Philippines. In 2009, they provided approximately 19 million CYPs.  This represents a 12 percent increase from the previous year.

DKT's policies require that its contraceptives be easily affordable to low-income persons. In every country, DKT's family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention programs price at least one brand of each family planning method within traditional affordability guidelines.

Donor costs for these programs are low and declining. In 2009, they were $2.29 per CYP. This number is low not only because of our efficiency - headquarters and fundraising cost as a percentage of the total budget is two percent - but also because our local program managers generate substantial revenues from the sales of contraceptives.

All DKT International programs use CYP (Couple Years of Protection) to measure their impact.  A CYP is the estimated protection provided by contraceptive methods during a one-year period.  It is based on the volume of a particular contraceptive device sold or distributed by DKT.  For example, the sale or distribution of 100 condoms equals 1 CYP.  Family planning programs use CYPs because they are easy to calculate from routinely collected data.  CYPs also enable programs to compare the contraceptive coverage provided by different methods of family planning.
